Role summary
Provides leadership and strategic direction to ensure a proactive posture relative to environmental issues and full compliance with all regulatory requirements. Ensures that the company is a good corporate citizen from an environmental perspective, in all the communities in which the company operates. Responsibilities include development of environmental policies and programs for clean water, air, waste, and management of pollution, as well as the proportion of recycled materials used in the company’s products and services. May work with other regulatory and legal executives to manage various environmental initiatives such as the company’s carbon credits program. Responsible for developing and maintaining strong and proactive relations with environmental regulatory agencies (such as the EPA) at both the State and Federal level, with a view to building and enhancing the relationship between regulators and the company. The objective is to move beyond the traditional pattern of environmental compliance and advocacy to one where environmental regulators view the company as a source of innovative ideas and objective information on matters impacting the industry and the agency. Proactively communicates the company’s perspective on environmental issues to various stakeholders including, the environmental agencies, customers, shareholders, organized interest groups and others. Requires an executive with in-depth knowledge of the company, the industry and its stakeholders and the structure and processes of the environmental regulatory agencies and their compliance requirements. May have an environmental engineering, legal, or regulatory background.
