Role summary
Manages, directs, or supervises staff and supports the policies and strategies of the labor and industrial relations function, in its dealing with employee populations organized by trade unions. May have a corporate wide role or may have specific responsibility for a particular section of the business, or group of business units. Interprets policies and defines tactics and negotiating positions in advance of union management contract negotiations, with a view to achieving the organization's objectives, while maintaining harmonious labor relations. Actively involved in the operational application of the collective bargaining agreements and conducts peer level negotiations with union leadership, governmental organizations and develops contingency plans in case negotiations fail and a strike results. Within its area of accountability, conducts research and analyses of labor issues to ensure that the issues, negotiation postures and fallback positions are well researched and understood. Within its area of responsibility, ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations relative to union management labor relations and contracts. Within the scope of its role, represents a point of decision on the interpretation of contracts and the application of policies. May be qualified as a lawyer.
