Intermediate Hazardous Waste Engineer

Role summary

Performs a variety of engineering responsibilities to support the proper management and disposal of hazardous goods and waste in compliance with a large variety of governmental policies and regulations. May train and oversee the handling of waste by Hazardous Waste Technicians to proper execute activities for safety and compliance. Following specialized methods, procedures and techniques, properly evaluates different types of waste according to EPA categories such as listed, characteristic, universal, and mixed, so that proper disposal measures can be implemented in accordance with regulatory controls. Some types of waste may be solid or unique to the specialized industry, such as pesticide, or petroleum, chemical, radioactive, toxic wastewater, etc. Using approved methods, determines waste characteristics such as ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity. Ensures proper classifications and labeling of hazardous waste material, for specialized or mixed wastes that may contain both hazardous and/or radioactive components waste components. Coordinates complex handling, processing, reporting, and disposal techniques in compliance with numerous agencies such as the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the US Department of Energy, and the EPA. Assists in ensuring waste is disposed of in a way that protects the environment. May research or recommend separation techniques or facilities that include solvent reclamation facilities, hazardous waste landfills, fuel blenders and incinerators. Typically requires a scientific or engineering degree in such fields as Chemical Engineering, Physics, Environmental Engineering plus related experience. Positions may require specialized licenses and/or certifications.
