Role summary
Manages, directs, or supervises staff and programs for the management of hazardous waste and chemicals in an organization, geographic, or business segment. Develops systems to reduce waste in in productions processes and protects the environment from dangerous substances that must be disposed of. May manage internal or contracted specialists whose goal is waste reduction, containment, or disposal. Responsibilities include defining any problems and all precautionary steps for preventing mishaps, analyzing containment and treatment, and evaluating root causes and the significance of hazardous incidents. Manages and communicates sensitive, technical, and high risk remedial and/or removal projects, providing technical illustration, interpretation, and advice as necessary. Keeps abreast of applicable regulatory requirements and scientific/technical needs, trends, methods, and innovations for applicability, or deployment. Oversees the research, audit, handling, and management of hazardous waste including such activities as measurement and tracking, reduction strategies, collection, disposal, service coordination, or waste separation. Manages, oversees, and ensures the completeness and accuracy of record keeping and timely reporting. Typically requires an Advanced (Masters or PhD) scientific or engineering degree in Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Physics or related field, and years of specialized prior management experience.
