Role summary
Manages, directs, or supervises staff and management of one or more product development projects in support of the goals and objectives of the product development function. Works closely with peers in the product design, and product management, and where applicable, the manufacturing function to migrate innovative product design concepts into finished, scalable, high quality commercialized goods. The ultimate goal is to provide the company with a competitive advantage in the marketplace relative to its portfolio of products. Evaluates the product requirement and design documents to determine how best to structure the product development process in a given case. Identifies the human, technical, and other resources needed to deliver the project on schedule and on budget. Assigns projects, or project elements to a subordinate team(s) of product development specialists and clarifies the goals and objectives for the project and each of its stages. Monitors progress on projects including the development of prototypes and models, where appropriate. Based on this close monitoring, may negotiate modifications to original specifications or deadlines, as technical challenges, material failures, or other project issues arise. Leverages a broad knowledge of engineering principles, manufacturing technologies, processes, equipment, cost structures, and supply chain characteristics in providing guidance to technical staff. Requires a degree in mechanical or industrial engineering, or closely related discipline combined with product development or engineering experience in a complex organization.
