Role summary
Manages, directs, or supervises staff and the product design function. Manages projects, formulates goals and objectives of the product design function. Develops novel design concepts and communicates and collaborates with senior marketing executives to ensure that the product designs meet/exceed product requirements based on input from product / brand management and customer research. The ultimate goal is conceiving and developing innovative and customer driven product designs that provide the company with a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Identifies the human, technical, and other resources needed to deliver the project on schedule and on budget. Assigns projects, or project elements to a subordinate team(s) of product designers and clarifies the goals and objectives for projects and each of their stages. Monitors progress on projects, including idea generation, research, concept development, and design, where appropriate. May negotiate modifications to original designs or deadlines, as challenges or other project issues arise. Leverages a broad knowledge of design principles such as aesthetic, usability, and innovation in providing guidance to staff. Skilled in activities such as drawing, illustration, electronic design, digital imagery, 3D modeling, computer aided drafting, and art direction. Requires a degree in design and product design or engineering experience in a complex product and organizational environment.
